How to Use the Overtime Pay Calculator

  1. Enter your regular hourly rate.
  2. Enter your regular hours worked in the pay period (typically up to 40/week).
  3. Enter how many overtime hours you worked beyond that.
  4. Select your overtime multiplier — 1.5x is standard under U.S. federal law (FLSA) for most hourly employees.
  5. Click "Calculate Overtime Pay" to see your full breakdown.

How Overtime Pay Is Calculated

Under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), most non-exempt hourly employees are entitled to overtime pay of at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. The formula is:

Overtime Pay = Hourly Rate × Overtime Multiplier × Overtime Hours

Your total pay for the period is your regular pay (rate × regular hours) plus your overtime pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every employee qualify for overtime?
No. "Exempt" employees (typically certain salaried roles meeting specific duties and pay thresholds) are not entitled to overtime under federal law. Rules also vary by state — some states have daily overtime thresholds in addition to weekly ones.

What if my state requires daily overtime?
A few states (like California) require overtime after 8 hours in a single day, not just 40 hours in a week. This calculator uses the standard weekly-threshold model — check your state's labor department for daily-overtime rules.

Is this calculator accounting for taxes?
No — this shows gross overtime pay before taxes and deductions.
