How to Use the Engine Displacement Calculator

  1. Select your measurement unit (millimeters or inches).
  2. Enter the bore (cylinder diameter) and stroke (piston travel distance) — found in your engine specs or manual.
  3. Enter the number of cylinders.
  4. Click "Calculate Displacement" to see the total volume in cc, liters, and cubic inches.

How Engine Displacement Is Calculated

Each cylinder is treated as a cylinder shape, so its swept volume uses the standard cylinder volume formula:

Volume per Cylinder = π × (Bore ÷ 2)² × Stroke

Total displacement multiplies this by the number of cylinders. The result is typically expressed in cubic centimeters (cc), then converted to liters (÷1000) or cubic inches (÷16.387) for the units commonly used in different markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between bore and stroke?
Bore is the diameter of the cylinder; stroke is the distance the piston travels up and down inside it. Both together determine how much volume each cylinder displaces per cycle.

Why do some engines list displacement in liters and others in cc?
It's mostly regional and marketing convention — 2000cc and 2.0L describe the same displacement, just expressed differently.

Does bigger displacement always mean more power?
Not necessarily — displacement is one factor among many (compression ratio, forced induction, RPM range, fuel type) that determine an engine's actual power output.
