General Range

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose whether you want to calculate A1C from a glucose reading, or estimate average glucose from a known A1C.
  2. Enter your number, and select mg/dL or mmol/L if entering glucose.
  3. Click "Calculate" to see your estimate and general range.

How A1C Is Calculated

This calculator uses the estimated Average Glucose (eAG) formula adopted by the American Diabetes Association, which links A1C percentage to average blood glucose over roughly the past 2-3 months:

A1C (%) = (Average Glucose in mg/dL + 46.7) ÷ 28.7

To calculate a1c from an mmol/L reading, glucose is first converted to mg/dL (mg/dL = mmol/L × 18.0182) before applying the formula. The reverse calculation solves the same formula for average glucose when you already know your A1C.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as a lab A1C test?
No. This calculator provides a mathematical estimate based on average glucose readings (such as from a home meter or CGM), not an actual laboratory A1C blood test. Lab results can differ from this estimate due to individual variation in red blood cell lifespan and other factors.

What A1C level is considered normal?
Generally, an A1C below 5.7% is considered normal, 5.7%–6.4% is considered prediabetes range, and 6.5% or above is generally used as a diabetes threshold. These are general reference ranges, not a diagnosis — your doctor interprets your result in the context of your full health picture.

Can I use this calculator to diagnose diabetes?
No. This tool is for general educational estimates only. Diagnosis requires laboratory testing and clinical evaluation by a healthcare provider.
