Grout Calculator

Buying too little grout means a mid-job hardware run; buying too much wastes money on a product with a shelf life. This grout calculator uses tile size, joint width, and joint depth to estimate how much grout you'll need for your project.

Grout Calculator

Add 10% for waste/spillage — round up to your bag size.

How to Use the Grout Calculator

  1. Measure your tile's length and width in inches.
  2. Enter your planned grout joint width and depth (check your tile spacer size and tile thickness — depth typically matches tile thickness).
  3. Enter the total area you're tiling in square feet.
  4. Click "Calculate Grout Needed" for an estimate in pounds.

How Grout Needed Is Calculated

This calculator uses a standard industry approximation formula for sanded/unsanded grout coverage:

Grout (lbs) = [(Tile Length + Tile Width) ÷ (Tile Length × Tile Width)] × Joint Width × Joint Depth × 33.3 × Area (sq ft)

Smaller tiles need more grout per square foot than larger tiles, because smaller tiles have more total joint length relative to their surface area — this formula accounts for that automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy extra grout?
Yes — this is an estimate. Actual usage varies by grout brand, tile texture, and installer technique. Adding roughly 10% and rounding up to the nearest bag size is standard practice.

Does grout type (sanded vs. unsanded) change the amount needed?
Coverage rates can vary slightly by product and manufacturer. Check your specific grout product's coverage chart if you want a more precise figure — this calculator gives a general estimate that works across most standard grout products.

What joint depth should I use?
Joint depth is typically equal to your tile's thickness, since grout should fill the full depth of the joint down to the tile's base.
