GKI Calculator

The Glucose Ketone Index (GKI) combines your blood glucose and blood ketone readings into a single number, commonly used to track metabolic state on a ketogenic or therapeutic low-carb diet. Enter both readings below to calculate yours.

GKI Calculator

Glucose (mmol/L) 0.0
Ketones (mmol/L) 0.0
GKI 0.0

How to Use the GKI Calculator

  1. Enter your blood glucose reading and select its unit (mg/dL or mmol/L).
  2. Enter your blood ketone reading in mmol/L (the standard unit for blood ketone meters).
  3. Click "Calculate GKI" to see your index.

How the GKI Is Calculated

The Glucose Ketone Index divides your blood glucose (converted to mmol/L) by your blood ketone level (mmol/L):

GKI = Glucose (mmol/L) ÷ Ketones (mmol/L)

Lower GKI values generally reflect a higher degree of ketosis relative to blood sugar, and the index is sometimes used to track metabolic state over time on a ketogenic or therapeutic low-carb diet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a "good" GKI?
There's no single universal target — GKI ranges referenced in some research and clinical contexts vary depending on the goal (e.g., general ketosis vs. therapeutic protocols). What's appropriate for you depends on your individual health context and goals.

Do I need a special meter to measure blood ketones?
Yes — blood ketone levels require a blood ketone meter and test strips (different from urine ketone strips, which are less precise for tracking trends).

Is GKI a medical diagnostic tool?
No. It's a general tracking ratio used informally in nutrition and metabolic health contexts, not a diagnostic or clinical measurement on its own.
