Pointing Calculator

Repointing brick or blockwork means filling the joints between bricks with fresh mortar. This calculator estimates how much mortar you'll need based on the total joint length and your joint size.

Based on ~0.6 cu ft mixed yield per 80 lb bag — check your product's yield.

How to Use the Pointing Calculator

  1. Measure or estimate the total linear length of joints you need to point (see the tip below for estimating this from wall area).
  2. Enter your joint width and depth in inches.
  3. Click "Calculate Mortar Needed" for an estimate in cubic feet and 80 lb bags.

How to Estimate Total Joint Length

If you don't know your total joint length, mark out a 1 square foot (or 1 square meter) section of the wall, count the linear length of all joints within it, then multiply by your total wall area. This gives a reliable average since brick spacing is usually consistent across a wall.

How Mortar Volume Is Calculated

Volume (cu ft) = Joint Length (ft) × Joint Width (ft) × Joint Depth (ft)

Bags needed is then volume divided by the mixed yield per bag (approximately 0.6 cu ft for a standard 80 lb bag, though this varies by product), rounded up to the nearest whole bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I double this estimate for both sides of a wall?
Yes — if you're pointing both faces of a wall, calculate each side separately (or double your total joint length) since they're independent surfaces.

What mortar type should I use for repointing?
This depends on your masonry's age and material — older or softer brick often needs lime mortar rather than harder portland cement mortar to avoid damaging the brick. Check with a mason or your local building conservation guidance if unsure, especially on historic structures.

How deep should I rake out old mortar before repointing?
A common guideline is raking to a depth of about 2-2.5 times the joint width, but this varies by masonry type and condition.
