How the Weighted Mean Is Calculated

Unlike a simple average, a weighted mean accounts for the relative importance of each value:

Weighted Mean = Σ(Value × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight)

For example, if a 3-credit class earned a 90 and a 4-credit class earned an 80: (90×3 + 80×4) ÷ (3+4) = 590 ÷ 7 ≈ 84.3 — notice this differs from a simple average of 85, because the 4-credit class counts more.
